Stay: ibis Styles, Goa

Where to stay in Goa, India

December means party season, and for most of us in Mumbai that means only one thing - pack off to Goa! Whether you're heading to Goa for Christmas or New Year's Eve, or just like that, deciding where to stay is always the big question.

Should you go North (Anjuna, Baga, Calangute) or head South (Colva, Varca, Palolem)? Each beach has its own charms and it really depends on what kind of experience you're looking for.

Calangute is, of course, party central! It's the largest beach in North Goa and is a tourist magnet. Unsurprisingly, you will find many hotel options around here. And recently a new hotel has been added to the mix.

India's first ibis Styles opened near Calangute in September this year. The ibis brand (part of Accor Group) has been in India for several years now, but this is the first time the group is bringing its 'Styles' brand to the country.

ibis is one of my favourite hotels to stay at when I'm travelling since they usually fit my budget and are almost always centrally located or well connected. So I was thrilled when ibis Styles Calangute made its debut in Goa!

The Styles brand is a premium offering from ibis, several notches above the regular ibis & ibis Budget hotels. The Styles hotels are more stylishly designed than the other ibis brands, have a bright and colourful decor, and always reflect the essence of the city they are located in.

ibis Styles Calangute is no exception. With its relaxed beach resort vibe, it fits right in with the 'Goa state of mind'. Its design is inspired by the Portuguese architecture so prevalent in Goa - bright colours, floor tiles inspired by local art, and a sea design throughout the hotel.

I loved the bright orange fishing boat mounted against the cerulean wall of the lobby, which sets the tone for beach and sea theme. Further pops of colour are added by the cushions with happy words depicted on them - fun, beach, sunshine - everything that you can expect in Goa!

Every room in the hotel has a balcony and a view of the pool, which is quite refreshing. The rooms are large by ibis standards and done up in cool blue and white tones. Of course, there's a comfy bed, LED TV and free Wi-Fi. The bathroom is also spacious and comes with good quality amenities. Being a resort (and unlike most ibis hotels) ibis Styles Calangute has 2 large pools. The hotel offers a Go Pro camera is you want to shoot your pool adventures! Plus there's a dedicated Kids' Corner. The lobby also has a small shop where you can buy quirky and colourful Goa souvenirs.

All meals at the restaurant Spice are generally buffet style (though an a la carte menu is available) and include several local delicacies alongside international favourites. I especially liked the fact they serve fresh poi (local bread) for breakfast, artistically presented on the back of a cycle, Goa-style :)

The hotel is a 10-minute walk from Tivai beach, which is quite lovely and not as crowded as Calangute can get. The hotel offers free bicycles if you want to cycle around the sleepy lanes of Goa. Both Calangute and Candolim beaches are easily accessible from the hotel as well.

So, if you're planning a Goa sojourn this holiday season, check in at ibis Styles Calangute. Head over to their website and you might just snag a deal.
