air, road, rail or sea? I love travelling by road since that’s the best way to
see the ever-changing scenery as you move from place to place. However, like
Sheldon, I too love trains – as long as they are clean! Fellow travel writer
Kathryn Burrington (of Travel With Kat) recently nominated me to participate in
this fun contest by Rhino Car Hire, called Travel Your Way and I immediately
thought of my recent trip to Europe. I used all the above modes of travel and
while I don’t have any images from air (I was busy shooting videos of Venice
from up in the air), here are my favourite transport-themed photos from the
trip.

While
we mainly travelled by train around Europe, we did take a few road trips in Tuscany
– to Siena and to Volterra where we stayed at a pretty agriturismo (read Under the Tuscan Sun). The above picture was
taken while meandering around the Tuscan countryside.
All
roads lead to Rome and they have since ancient times, like this street
through Ostia Antica – the site of an ancient harbour city dating back
to 4 BC.

here’s one in Murano – walking down Fondamenta Venier when the day-trippers
have left and most of the shops are closed.

Rail
Europe’s
rail network is amazing and we could easily travel between three countries
and from city to city by taking the train. The Italian countryside is beautiful
but it was in Austria that we saw some really stunning scenery as our train
went by. Here’s a pic taken en route Salzburg to Zell Am See and further
to Europe’s highest waterfall – Krimml Falls.

From
Salzburg we also took the train to the village of Hallstatt, which is the
oldest still-inhabited village in Europe. The train drops you off at Hallstatt
station and a ferry meets each train to take you across the lake to the
picturesque village.

These
are pictures of the Venetian lagoon at different places, so technically not ‘sea’
routes! We took a vaporetto (water-bus) to San Michele,
which is Venice’s cemetery.

What a cool post!! Loved the train shots but my personal favourite mode to travel is always by road / self drive. Gives you the freedom to stop and take in the beauty of the place much more than any other route. 🙂
